After a very rewarding 34 year career in the Royal Air Force and 12 years as a Professsional Photographer, I find myself retired with time to fill with my interests and hobbies. This website aims to share these and help others learn from my experience.
One of my main hobbies these days is home energy, how to save money and making our lives comfortable. It has been long term goal looking at home insulation, solar PV, heat pumps, electric vehicles, home batteries, home automation and novel energy tariffs.
With the increasing energy costs this interest has saved us money over the years. My aim is to keep running costs to a minimum by investing in various improvements.
Here I will explain my journey and look at costs.
I have had a camera in my hand since my early teens but it was on my retitement from the RAF in 2008 that allowed me to explore this interest as a profession. This followed a 6 month tour in the Falkland Islands where photography and the outstanding wildlife of the South Atlantic kept me sane.
After much research and training I settled on wedding photography as it would go towards paying the bills. It is a challenging and competive industry with the chance to meet many lovely couples on one of their most days of their lives.
I also explored drone photography with a number of interesting commissions for the construction industry.
I have always been interested in aircraft and engineering. The RAF was the obvious career for me starting as an RAF Apprentice at No 1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton and finishing as an Engineering Officer specialising in airborne software maintenance.
Today this interest continues as an active member of the VATSIM flight simulation organisation, as controller and pilot, and aviation photography.
