Exploring Energy Efficiency with a Traditional Stone Cottage

Discover innovative home energy solutions tailored for traditional stone cottages in Scotland. From heat pumps to electric vehicles and solar panels with our experience over the past 12 years.

Solar Power Systems

Our first drip into energy efficiency was to invest in a solar PV array over a decade ago. This was an expensive and small system available at the time but allowed us to get in on the last full Feed In Tariff (FIT). Solar PV is now available at much cheaper costs but no FIT.

Electric Vehicles and Charging

After a brief period with a mild hybrid electric car, we got our first battery electic vehicle (BEV), a Kia e-Niro. It was a dream and the best car I have owned in nearly 50 years of driving. We had a home charger installed at the same time. We have since replaced it with a Tesla Model and added a Renault Zoe.

Energy-Efficient Heat Pumps

We used to rely on LPG gas heating which is one of the most expensive home heating options. About 5 years ago heat pumps were new and little talked about. After some research we found an excellent contractor to replace the LPG with an Air Sourced Heat Pump (ASHP). It immediately halved our annual heating costs.
